Origin and history

Puycasquier Church, listed as a Historic Monument, is a 14th century Gothic building located in the centre of the village. It consists of three naves of five bays vaulted with warheads, completed by a flat bedside. The western facade, the lower bell tower and the north wall are constructed of limestone-cut stone, while later brick reshuffles are visible. The western portal, typical of the Gothic, rests on a stone bench and presents three broken windows supported by leafy columns. The tympanum, which is now incomplete, once retained a missing statue, of which only the base remains.

The bell tower, characteristic of the building, rests on a square stone base and rises into two octagonal brick floors, pierced with openings and decorated with decorative motifs. To the west, a hall adjacent to the church forms a large awning, while the south side overlooks two chapels adjacent to the town hall. The church of Saint-Adbon and Saint-Sennen has undergone several changes over the centuries, but its sculpted portal, dating from the first half of the 14th century, remains a remarkable testimony of local medieval architecture.

The building was partially protected by an order of 7 September 1977, covering the bell tower, its gate, its awning, and the facades and roofs of the nave. Owned by the commune, the church retains medieval elements despite its successive transformations. Its location in the heart of the village of Puycasquier, in the Gers, makes it a central element of the architectural heritage of Occitanie.
