Origin and history

The church of Saint-Antoine de Saint-Sauveur, located in the commune of Senillé-Saint-Sauveur (formerly Saint-Sauveur, code Insee 86245) in New Aquitaine, is a religious building built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 16th century. The church itself dates back to the end of the 15th century, while the remains of the old cloister date back to the next century. These architectural elements testify to a pivotal period between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, marked by stylistic changes and changing liturgical needs.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the church was the subject of a classification order on 28 December 1910, followed by the remains of the cloister, which in turn was protected by an order of 22 October 1913. The location of the monument, specified as "a priori satisfactory" (level 5/10), places the building at the approximate address of the 2 Impasse du Couvent, in the territory of the former commune of Saint-Sauveur, now integrated in Senillé-Saint-Sauveur. A communal property, the church retains a major heritage value, although its accessibility (visits, current uses) is not detailed in the available sources.

Sources also mention a Creative Commons license for photographic credits (Remi Jouan), as well as a reference to the Merimée database, confirming its protected status. The lack of details about the sponsors or artisans of the period reflects the limits of the accessible archives, but underlines the importance of this site as a witness to local religious and architectural history. The Department of Vienna (Poitou-Charentes region before 2016, today New Aquitaine) is home to other similar monuments, inscribed in a dense heritage network.
