Choir (Box B 152): Registration by Order of 16 October 2000

Origin and history

The Saint-Blaise church in Douville-en-Auge is a Catholic building located in Calvados, Normandy. It illustrates several architectural periods, with a Romanesque nave of the 12th century, a Gothic choir of the beginning of the 13th, and later modifications in the 16th and 18th centuries. Its bell tower, dated the 16th century, is a massive tower surmounted by a slate pyramid, while the nave windows were pierced in the 18th century. The choir, inscribed in historical monuments since 2000, retains a arch of warheads and characteristic foothills.

The structure combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, as evidenced by the grimaçant modillons and the 13th century ogival gate on the north side. The furniture of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the sacristy added to the modern era, complete this representative set of Norman rural churches. The monument reflects the architectural and religious evolution of the region, while serving as a place of worship and local heritage.

The church is mentioned in historical works such as the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont (1862), which emphasizes its importance in the religious and architectural landscape of the Pays d'Auge. Its steeple, foothills and right bedside make it a notable example of the ecclesiastical constructions of this area, between Romanesque tradition and Gothic innovations.

Owned by the commune, the building is partially protected, with its choir registered since 16 October 2000. The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its continuing role in local life, with organized visits and a valorization of its movable and real estate heritage.

The historical context of Douville-en-Auge, village of Calvados, is marked by a rural and artisanal economy, typical of the Pays d'Auge. Churches like Saint-Blaise served as a spiritual and community centre, hosting gatherings, religious festivals and parish activities. Their architecture often evolved with available resources and regional stylistic influences.

The successive modifications of the church, from the 18th century windows to the addition of sacristy, illustrate the adaptation of religious buildings to the changing needs of parishes. These transformations also reflect periods of prosperity or economic hardship, such as post-war reconstructions or local enrichment beautifications.
