Jean Coeur - Lord of Chablis and Bishop of Bourges Reconstructed the church in the 15th century.

Origin and history

The church Saint-Christophe-et-Saint-Phalier de Chabris is a Catholic building located in the commune of Chabris, in the Indre department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It belongs to the natural region of Boischaut Nord and depends on the archdiocese of Bourges. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, it has been a historic monument since 18 October 1910.

The church is distinguished by its medieval architecture, including a nave without sideways, a double transept, a choir followed by a semicircular sanctuary, and a square bell tower surmounted by an octagonal arrow. A crypt extends under the choir and sanctuary, while traces of paintings and bas-reliefs depicting signs of the zodiac adorn the interior and exterior of the building.

According to tradition, the church was rebuilt by Jean Coeur, lord of Chablis and bishop of Bourges (1446-1483), on the foundations of a 12th century building. The four piles of the arm of the cross and part of the west wall of the north transept are the only remains of this first construction. The church is placed under the double patronage of Saint Christophe and Saint Phalier, reflecting its religious and historical importance in the region.
