Origin and history

Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais church in Courdimanche-sur-Essonne is a Catholic religious building dedicated to Saints Gervais and Protais. Located in the Essonne department in Île-de-France, it presents architectural parts dating mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, with subsequent additions like the southern collateral probably built after the Hundred Years War. The nave was covered with plaster in the 18th century, while the bell tower, rebuilt in 1898, was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 6 July 1925.

The interior furniture includes a 19th century altarpiece and a realistic statue of a parish priest from the late 19th or early 20th century. Several movable objects were registered in 1982, bearing witness to the heritage wealth of the building. The bell tower, restored between the 1960s and 1970s, remains an emblematic element of this parish church, still owned by the commune.

The church is part of a historical context marked by its central role in the religious and community life of Courdimanche-sur-Essonne. Its architecture reflects stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs throughout the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Successive restorations, especially those of the 20th century, have preserved this local heritage, now accessible to the public and integrated into the lists of religious and historical monuments of the Essonne.
