Origin and history

The Saint-Just de Palmes Church is a Romanesque religious building located near the hamlet of Palmes in the territory of the municipality of Campoussy. This monument, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, is part of the historical landscape of the Pyrénées-Orientales, an area marked by a strong presence of medieval religious buildings. Romanesque churches, like that of Saint-Just de Palmes, played a central role in the life of rural communities in the Middle Ages.

They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, thus reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. In the Roussillon, these buildings were often constructed of local stone, incorporating typical architectural elements such as arches in the middle of the hangar and cradle vaults.
