Origin and history

The Saint-Maurice church of Soultz-Haut-Rhin, located in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the thirteenth century. The architectural features make it possible to date the choir of the second half of the 13th century and the nave of the 14th century. Although the archives are lacking to accurately trace its construction, stylistic elements and inscriptions testify to its evolution over centuries, especially in the 15th and early 17th centuries.

The first attested mention of the church dates from 1340, with the erection of an altar by Berthold Waldner. The western span, decorated with the coat of arms of the bishop of Strasbourg Robert of Bavaria (depending on 1471-1478) and the date 1489 on a foothills, suggests work or alterations at this time. In 1610, the cross tower was raised by stone tailor Daniel Demaret, whose signature and date appear on the second gallery. These changes illustrate the successive adaptations of the building to liturgical and aesthetic needs.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 12 August 1920, Saint-Maurice Church is now owned by the municipality of Soultz-Haut-Rhin. Its architecture combines Gothic and Renaissance influences, reflecting periods of construction and transformation. In particular, the building houses Silbermann organs, mentioned in local studies such as those of Antoine Bender (1960) or Marc Grossephan (2004), highlighting its heritage and cultural importance in the Alsatian region.
