Origin and history

The Saint-Pancrace church of Villar-Saint-Pancrace, located in the Hautes-Alpes, was built between the last quarter of the 15th century and the first quarter of the 16th century. It replaces an earlier building, as evidenced by the authorization given in 1497 by Bishop Rostaing of Ancézune. The architecture combines late Gothic elements, such as the triple-tore ribs and carved caps, with later additions, including an 18th-century window to the choir.

The main entrance, to the south, is flanked by a false door decorated with a carved lintel representing the monogram of Christ and the Virgin. Two human-represented caps frame the archvolt, remains of an ancient wooden awning. Inside, the two-span nave and the square choir are covered with crossovers of warheads, while the northern side chapels are vaulted in a cradle. The painted decorations of the 19th century, imitating grey marble, adorn the veins and arches.

The steeple, sober and without ornaments, is distinguished by its wooden summital gallery, sheltered under an arrow. The exterior facades are rhythmized by blind tuff arches. After World War II, the building was restored, especially for the masonry and the steeple arrow. The date of 1542, engraved on the impost of the door with the signature IHOANNES RISTOLANI, probably marks the completion of the work or a key stage of the construction.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 1994, the church belongs to the commune. Its sober plan, Gothic decorative elements and subsequent modifications illustrate the architectural and liturgical evolution of an Alpine parish between the late Middle Ages and the modern era.
