Origin and history

The church of Saint-Philibert des Estables is a Catholic parish church located in the commune of Estables, Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is distinguished by its exceptional altitude of more than 1,340 meters, making it the highest parish church in the department. Its location reflects the religious and community importance in this rural area of the Mézenc massif, where climatic conditions have shaped the local architecture.

Originally, the Ecclesiastical riding of Les Estables was a priory-curtain dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre du Monastier from 1087. After the Revolution, its management was entrusted to the sacristan of the abbey. The present church, built between 1904 and 1906, replaced a demolished Romanesque building to meet the population growth of the municipality. This reconstruction project marks a period of modernization and adaptation to the needs of an expanding population.

The church stained glass windows, created in the 1920s by master glassmaker Charles Borie, are a remarkable part of his heritage. Their preservation is ensured by a system of double exterior windows, an architectural technique typical of the Mézenc massif to resist the rigors of the climate. In 1986, an interior restoration carried out by the architectural firm André Saugues made it possible to highlight these unique characteristics, while respecting the constraints associated with the scarcity of wood in the region in the nineteenth century.

The church has recently gained a reputation by being selected for the 2023 Heritage Lotto, an initiative to preserve and enhance French historical monuments. This recognition underlines its cultural and architectural importance in the religious and heritage landscape of the Haute-Loire.
