Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Mauves-sur-Huisne Church is a Catholic building located in the Orne department in Normandy. Built mainly in the 13th century, it is distinguished by its medieval bell tower, the only authentic element of this period. The nave and choir, although perhaps dating back to the 12th century, were profoundly transformed in the 19th century, erasing their original appearance. The bell tower, square in shape at its base, rises up to adopt an octagonal structure two thirds of its height. Its corners are reinforced by double buttresses surmounted by pinacles, and each side of l A vaulted room, open to the church, occupies its base.

The building was listed as a historic monument in 1975, recognizing its heritage value. The property belongs to the commune of Mauves-sur-Huisne, located in the district of Alençon. Although the church underwent further modernization, its bell tower remains a remarkable architectural testimony of 13th century religious art in Lower Normandy. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its importance in local heritage, notably through its listing in the Merimée inventory.

The site is referenced under Insee code 61255 for the municipality, and its approximate address, 7 Rue Catinat, allows it to be located with an accuracy deemed satisfactory. The protected elements include the entire church, as defined by the cadastre (section B, parcel 30). No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals) or any additional uses such as guest rooms.
