Origin and history

The church of Saint Vincent de Villedômer, classified as a Historical Monument, has its origins in the 12th century. At that time, it consisted of a nave, a chorus and a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four. The choir, decorated with dogive vaults, rests on historic capitals, characteristic of late Romanesque architecture. This first state reflects a sober construction, typical of the rural churches of the region.

In the 16th century, the building underwent major transformations with the addition of two side chapels to the span of the choir. The southern chapel is distinguished by a pilaster-framed door, topped by an entrapment and a gable decorated with pinnacles. The southern door of the nave, pierced at the same time, also features pilasters and a shell in decoration, emblematic elements of the Renaissance. These additions reflect a desire to beautify and adapt to the artistic tastes of the time.

The 19th century marked a new phase of reshaping, particularly with the reconstruction of the nave. It is then divided into three bays vaulted with brick, modernizing the structure while maintaining traces of earlier periods. The inscription of the church as a Historic Monument in 1948 underscores its heritage value, mixing medieval heritage, Renaissance and more recent interventions. Today, the building belongs to the municipality and remains a witness to the architectural and cultural developments of Villedômer.
