Origin and history
Sainte-Marie de Montferrer Church is a Romanesque religious building built in the 12th century, in the village of Montferrer, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales (Occitanie region). Its typical architecture of the Roussillon is characterized by a unique nave arched in an ogival cradle, a cul-de-four apse, and a square bell tower with bunk floors. The latter, crowned with a pyramid in lauze, is one of the few preserved examples of Romanesque bell towers in the region, with its geminied bays decorated with columns and capitals. The southern gate, framed by a billet archvolt and flanked by columns, also bears witness to the decorative richness of the period.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 8 August 1922, the church houses several protected objects, including a ciborium, a cross-reliquary called lignum crucis, and a statue of Virgin with the Child, listed in the Palissy base. Originally, the nave was covered with slate lauze, traditional materials of the region. Its bell tower, with its two floors with geminied bays, represents a rare architectural model for local Romanesque churches, often remodeled over the centuries.
The historical sources mention specific studies on the tower towers of the Roussillon and the gates of the Vallespir, highlighting the heritage importance of this building. Although little documented about its sponsors or its social history, the church embodies the central role of places of worship in the medieval organization of Catalan villages, between spirituality, community gathering and identity affirmation. Its early ranking (1922) reflects the recognition of its artistic and historical value from the early twentieth century.
