Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Croix du Conquet, located in the Finistère, is an emblematic religious building of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, built between 1856 and 1859 according to the plans of diocesan architect Joseph Bigot. In a flamboyant neo-Gothic style, it is distinguished by its three-vessel Latin cross plan, its flat bedside framed by sacristies, and its octagonal steeple. The materials used, including granite-cut stone and quartz microdiorite, come in part from the ancient chapels of Saint Christophe and Lochrist, dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The ground, covered with granite and shale slabs, and the yellow-ribed, white-ribed nave, reinforce its historical character.

The church houses remarkable heritage features, including the tomb of Michel de Nobletz, a preacher famous in Lower Britain in the 17th century. Its stained glass windows, divided into three ensembles, illustrate its rich artistic heritage: the master window of the choir (XVI century, from the church of Lochrist), two hagiographic windows by Robert Micheau-Vernez in 1930-1932, and twelve modern stained glass windows created by Jacques Bony between 1960 and 1971. The western façade is dated 1856, marking the beginning of its construction by the entrepreneur Jezéquel. Classified as a Historic Monument in 2013, it now belongs to the municipality.

The architectural style of the church, inspired by the flamboyant Gothic, reflects the eclectic trends of the 19th century, mixing medieval reinterpretation and technical innovations. The broken arches, the columns integrated into the arcades, and the lateral chapels opened on the transept underline this desire to revive with an idealized past. The stained glass windows offer an artistic panorama extending from the 16th to the 20th century, reflecting stylistic developments and local religious concerns. The use of recycled materials from ancient chapels strengthens its anchor in Breton history, while symbolizing spiritual and community continuity.

The location of the church, Charles Minguy Square in the Conquet, makes it a central point of local life. His inscription in the title of Historic Monuments in 2013 devotes its heritage value, both for its architecture and for the works it houses. The glassmakers Robert Micheau-Vernez and Jacques Bony, with their respective contributions, marked the aesthetic evolution of the building, while the architect Joseph Bigot, a major figure in Breton religious planning in the 19th century, left a lasting mark there. Today, the church remains an active place of worship and a symbol of the Finnish cultural heritage.
