Origin and history
The church of Saint-Gal de Roffiac is a Catholic religious monument located in the village of Roffiac, in the department of Cantal, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built mainly in the 12th and 15th centuries, it is distinguished by a nave of two vaulted bays in dome on tubes, as well as a vaulted choir in cul-de-four. Originally, a dome occupied the site of the old bell tower, of which only the drum remains today, replaced at the end of the 15th century by a campanile open with four bays. The five-paned exterior of the Aabside house contains inside five niches forming chapels, while column arches adorn this polygonal choir, a rare example in the area.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 19 August 1921, Saint-Gal's church illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Romanesque and late Gothic additions. Its 15th century campanile, its interior archatures and the original structure of its choir make it a remarkable witness to the religious heritage of Auvergnat. The property of the building belongs to the commune of Roffiac, and its exact address, 12 Rue Saint-Gal, is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 15164.
The building combines Romanesque elements, such as the dome nave on trunks, and Gothic additions, including the campanile and the archatures of the abside. These characteristics make it a subject of study for the history of religious architecture in Haute-Auvergne. Available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum and the Merimée base, confirm its heritage importance and legal protection for more than a century.
