Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Arras-en-Lavedan, located in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is a monument whose origins date back to at least the 12th century, with major changes in the 17th and 18th centuries. It retains a variety of architectural elements, such as a gothic-style entrance door and a rectangular tower-clocher, bearing witness to its successive transformations. The site is also marked by the presence of a circular tower, the last vestige of the abbots Lays, a local institution linked to the defence of the Pyrenees from the 8th century.

The abbots Lays, the Chanoin warriors charged with protecting the Pyrenean borders, were associated with the history of Arras as early as 759. Their mansion, now extinct with the exception of the circular tower, was adjacent to the church. Their role included the maintenance of the parish priest and the religious building, emphasizing the close link between spiritual, military and community power in the region. The present church, though deeply redesigned, perpetuates this medieval memory through its structures and its status as a Historical Monument since 1979.

The church of Saint Martin (cadastered under Parcel A 789) is now owned by the municipality of Arras-en-Lavedan. Its architecture thus blends medieval and modern heritages, reflecting local evolutions, from the defensive missions of the abbots Lays to the religious and social transformations of the following centuries. The accuracy of its location, assessed as satisfactory, makes it possible to situate its importance in the heritage landscape of Occitanie.
