Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Aujac is a Catholic religious building in the commune of Aujac, Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. Its construction spans several centuries: a first church was built in the 11th century, followed by partial reconstruction in the 12th century (Nef and Northern Gate). The choir, on the other hand, dates from the 13th century, illustrating the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. These successive stages reflect the evolution of architectural techniques and liturgical needs of the time.
From the 15th century on, the church underwent many changes, reflecting its continued use and its adaptation to the changing needs of the parish. A major event occurred in 1933 when a storm destroyed the structure of the bell tower. The latter is then restored with a reinforced concrete cover, a modern solution for the era, which marks a break with traditional materials. These successive transformations underline the resilience of the building to climate hazards and technological developments.
In terms of heritage, the Church of Saint Martin is recognized for its historical and architectural value. It is listed and classified as historic monuments in 2006, a rare double protection that attests to its importance in the regional heritage. Its history, marked by reconstructions and adaptations, makes it a privileged witness of almost a millennium of religious and community life in Charente-Maritime.
