Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Beaune-la-Rolande is a Catholic building located in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Originally built in the 12th century, it depended on the Abbey of Saint-Denis and had eight spans. Half of the crypt, the base of the bell tower, a window and a cornice are left on the south wall. The church, fortified, was partially destroyed in 1427 during a fire caused by the English, then rebuilt in the late 15th century. The bell tower, then reinforced, was protected by a harrow and a drawbridge, now disappeared.
In the 16th century, during the reign of Francis I, side chapels were added, and the nave bass was built. The crypt, occupying the entire area of the choir, is accessible by two stairs, one inside and the other outside. The building was repaired in the 19th century, notably in 1860-1861, and its arrow, burned, was rebuilt in 1865 according to a project by Baudot and Viollet-le-Duc. Ranked a historical monument in 1911, the church preserves traces of its defensive past, like murderers under the porch.
The Church of Saint Martin illustrates medieval and Renaissance religious architecture, marked by phases of destruction and reconstruction. Its fortified status reflects the region's military tensions, particularly during the Hundred Years' War. Today, it remains a testimony of the historical and religious heritage of Loiret, managed by the municipality of Beaune-la-Rolande.
