Origin and history

The church Saint-Martin de Sancey-le-Grand, located in the Doubs department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 15th century. It underwent major changes in the 16th and 19th centuries, especially during the first quarter of the latter. These transformations reflect the architectural and liturgical evolutions of each epoch, while preserving characteristic elements of the region, such as its typically comtois imperial bell tower.

The church has been protected as historic monuments since 8 June 1926, a recognition of its heritage value. It belongs to the commune and is part of the parish of Sancey-Belleherbe, attached to the diocese of Besançon. This status underlines its importance in the local religious and cultural landscape, while ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The church furniture is equally remarkable, with several retables listed in the inventory of historical monuments. Among them are works depicting biblical scenes such as the Baptism of Christ, the Death of Saint Joseph, and the Meeting of Jesus and Saint John the Baptist. These artistic elements, combined with the architecture of the building, testify to the richness of the region's sacred heritage.

The building is located precisely at 18 Rue de la Yese, in the municipality of Sancey-le-Grand, identified by the code Insee 25529. Although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (Level 5), its integration into the urban fabric and its role in community life remain significant. The church, open to the public, continues to play a central role in the spiritual and cultural life of the locality.
