Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Thiverval-Grignon, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, was built between 1170 and 1230 under the aegis of Notre-Dame de Coulombs Abbey. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements (chœur, apsides and tower) dated from the 12th century to a 13th century Gothic nave. The building, oriented according to a Latin cross plan, consists of a nave with three vessels and five spans, leading to a semicircular bedside. Ranked among the first French historical monuments by the list of 1846, it illustrates the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles in the region.

Several restoration campaigns marked its history: a first in 1804, and then a second in 1952, when the traces of a rose once adorned the west facade were rediscovered. Further work took place in 1958, and between 2008 and 2011, reflecting a continuous interview. Owned by the commune, the church remains a remarkable example of the medieval Franciscan religious heritage, linked to local monastic life via the Abbey of Coulombs.

Its early ranking (1846) underscores its historical and architectural importance. The successive restorations preserved original elements, such as the 12th century structures or the remains of the rosace. Today, the Church of Saint Martin embodies both a monastic heritage and a major stylistic evolution, while remaining rooted in the community life of Winterval-Grignon.
