Origin and history
Saint-Mellon de Plomelin Church is a Catholic parish church located in the Finistère department in Brittany. It was built between 1892 and 1893 according to the plans of Canon Jean-Marie Abgrall, in a neo-Roman style, and consecrated on October 11, 1893. The neo-Gothic arrow was added in 1896, between May 28 and July 11, by entrepreneur Jean-Louis Le Naour. This building replaces an ancient sanctuary and is the only one in the diocese of Quimper and Leon dedicated to Saint Mellon, the first bishop of Rouen.
The church consists of a nave of seven spans with low sides, a semicircular choir, two symmetrical porches, a sacristy and an old room of catechisms. The nave, panelled, is lit by high windows and separated from the bottom by arches in the middle of the hanger. The square bell tower is surmounted by an octagonal arrow decorated with crossettes, framed at its base by four pediments and four lanterns.
The building houses a ringtone of four bells, melted in 1901 by Ferdinand Farnier in Robécourt. These bells, of different sizes and weights, form a harmonious set in FA3, SOL3, LA3 and SIb3. Their installation reflects the importance of the church in the parish and cultural life of Plomelin at that time.
