Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre du Mesnil-Aubert is a Catholic building dating back to the 12th century, although its construction periods extend from the 13th to the 19th century. Located in the commune of Mesnil-Aubert, in the department of Manche in Normandy, it presents various architectural elements, including Romanesque bays, a portal and double arches supporting the tower. Its vaults of the choir date from the 14th century, while the 15th century seigneurial chapel, now transformed into a sacristy, bears witness to its architectural evolution.
The church houses remarkable murals dating from the 13th to 16th centuries, rediscovered in 1984. These paintings, as well as the building itself, led to its classification as historical monuments by order of 9 July 1990. The church thus illustrates centuries of religious and artistic history, mixing medieval heritage and subsequent transformations.
The location of the church, specified by the Merimée base, is located at 1 Rue du Calvaire in Le Mesnil-Aubert. Owned by the commune, it remains a major architectural and cultural testimony of Lower Normandy, now integrated into the Normandy region. Its classification protects both its structure and its interior decorations, emphasizing its heritage importance.
