Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Putot-en-Auge Church is a Catholic religious building located in the town of Putot-en-Auge, Calvados department, Normandy. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, it illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region, with Romanesque and Gothic influences peculiar to these periods. Its classification as historic monuments in 1921 reflects its heritage value and its importance in the local cultural landscape.
The monument is part of a historical context marked by the expansion of Christianity in Normandy. At that time, parish churches like Saint Peter played a central role in community life, serving as places of worship, assembly and local affairs management. Their construction often reflected the prosperity of the villages and the influence of local lords or religious institutions. Putot-en-Auge, like other Norman villages, organized around his church, the focal point of social and spiritual life.
The building was officially recognized for its heritage value by a classification order dated July 2, 1921. This classification, which took place at the beginning of the 20th century, is part of a period of increased awareness of the need to preserve the French architectural heritage. The protected elements concern the entire church, emphasizing its stylistic and historical unity. Today, the monument remains a testimony to the architectural and religious evolutions of medieval and modern Normandy.
The sources available, including Arcisse de Caumont's references in his monumental Statistique du Calvados (1862), provide detailed descriptions of the building. These historical documents, combined with administrative data such as the Insee code of the municipality (14524), allow the monument to be precisely situated in its geographical and institutional context. The address recorded in the Mérimée database (5064 L'Église, 14430 Putot-en-Auge) confirms its local anchoring and accessibility for visitors.
