Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre de Rougnac, located in the Charente department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. It has a nave of pre-Roman origin, vaulted and prolonged by a span of forearm characteristic of this period. This first medieval nucleus bears witness to an ancient occupation of the site, probably linked to a village community structured around a Christian place of worship.
In the 15th century, the church expanded significantly westward, perhaps reflecting the population increase or the enrichment of the parish. The bell tower, erected above the choir, has a arch with four branches of warheads and two chamfered liernes, typical of the late flamboyant Gothic. This period also saw the expansion of the rectangular crypt, initially vaulted in a low cradle, which served as burial for the local lords of the Repare. These transformations illustrate the architectural and social evolution of the monument, between Romanesque heritage and Gothic innovations.
The building, registered with historical monuments in 2001, thus preserves traces of nearly nine centuries of history, from its pre-Roman foundations to its 19th century restorations. The crypt, a rare and well preserved element, as well as the 15th century bell tower, are major testimonies of the religious and seigneurial heritage of the region. The official protection recognizes the heritage value of this complex, now owned by the commune of Rougnac.
