Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Tilly-sur-Seulles Church is a Catholic church located in the Calvados department, east of the town of Tilly-sur-Seulles, overlooking the Seulles River. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it embodies the medieval religious architecture of the region, with Norman influences characteristic of this period. The building was listed as a Historic Monument on January 24, 1927, recognizing its heritage value and significance in local history.
The church suffered significant damage during the bombings of June 1944, in the context of the Normandy Landing. After post-World War II summary repairs, it was thoroughly restored between 2023 and 2025, including blankets, exterior walls and stained glass windows. Its official reopening took place on 6 September 2025, marking a new stage in its preservation.
The church houses several elements classified as objects, including remarkable paintings and statues. Among them are the Immaculate Conception known as Notre-Dame de Tilly (central painting of the high altar), eight other paintings depicting religious scenes (such as the Adoration of the Shepherds or Saint-Jérôme), as well as a statue of Saint-Clair with distinctive attributes. These works illustrate the artistic and devout richness associated with this place of worship.
The location of the church, near Audrieu (1 Route d'Audrieu), and its Insee code (14692) administratively place it in the commune of Tilly-sur-Seulles, in Lower Normandy (now Normandy). Its communal ownership status and its openness to the public make it an accessible site, although the practical information (visits, services) is not detailed in the available sources.
Bibliographical references, such as the work of Arcisse de Caumont Statistique monumentale du Calvados (1846), highlight the historical interest of this monument. The modern sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) complete this data by specifying its inscription in the Historical Monuments and recent work, while providing GPS coordinates for an approximate location (precision: 6/10).
