Jean V de Bertrand - Bishop of Geneva Visit the parish in 1414.

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Bluffy, located in the Haute-Savoie department, is a Catholic building whose origins date back to at least the eleventh century. A first church seems attested around the middle of this century, while a place of worship is clearly mentioned in 1414 during the pastoral visit of John V of Bertrand, bishop of Geneva. These traces suggest an ancient religious presence in the commune, although the remains of this period are today difficult to identify.

In 1414 Bishop John V of Bertrand inspected the parish of Bluffy, confirming the existence of a church already built in the 15th century. This medieval building, probably modest, undergoes several restorations over the centuries, without the sources specifying their nature or magnitude. However, this work reflects the continued importance of the place to the local community, despite the political and religious upheavals in the region, including its proximity to Geneva.

The current structure dates mainly from the 19th century, marking a major reconstruction. The nave, partially built in 1844, was followed by the choir, sacristy and bell tower in 1881. These work campaigns profoundly transform the church, giving it its present appearance, mixing neoclassicism and traditional Savoyard elements. The last interventions in 2007 concern roofs, the bell tower, as well as interior fittings such as heating and decoration.

Bluffy, like many villages in Haute-Savoie, saw his church play a central role in community life, especially from the 19th century. At that time, the region, then under Sardinian and then French influence, underwent a religious renewal marked by the construction or renovation of cultural buildings. These buildings become symbols of stability and local identity, in the context of economic and social changes linked to the emerging industrialisation and cross-border trade with neighbouring Switzerland.

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul thus illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolution of Haute-Savoie. Its history, from its possible early novels to its contemporary restorations, reflects the successive adaptations of a place of worship to the changing needs of its faithful. Today, it remains a testimony of Bluffy's religious and historical heritage, between medieval heritage and modernity.
