Origin and history
The church of Saint-Sauveur de Liaucous, located in Mostuéjouls in the department of Aveyron (Occitanie region), is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. It underwent major changes in the 16th and 19th centuries, including the addition of lateral chapels and the transformation of absidioles. Originally, it was juxtaposed to a castle, a room of which overlooked the first span of the nave. The demolition of this castle in the seventeenth century isolated the church, giving it its present appearance.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 26 September 1930, the church is distinguished by its unique architecture: a nave of two spans flanked by low-sides, a choir preceding a three-sided apse, and a bell tower covered with an ovoid dome. The foothills are connected by arcs forming a characteristic lateral belt. The southern and northern chapels, added to the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries respectively, bear witness to the architectural and liturgical developments of the building.
Owned by the municipality of Mostuéjouls, the church Saint-Sauveur de Liaucous illustrates the religious and medieval heritage of Rouergue. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to the local seigneury. Available sources, such as the Merimée base and the communal archives, confirm its central role in the cultural landscape of Aveyron.
