Origin and history
The church Saint-Vaast d'Agnières is located in the hamlet of Agnières, on the territory of the commune of Hescamps, in the southwest of the department of the Somme (Hauts-de-France). Its history dates back to the thirteenth century, the period of its initial construction. The nave and the bell tower were rebuilt later in the 16th and 17th centuries, marking an architectural evolution over several periods.
The building is distinguished by its ceramic equipment, combining limestone, flint and bricks, as well as its wooden vaulted nave. The porch has a flamboyant decor, typical of the late Middle Ages. However, its most remarkable treasure remains its 13th century stained glass windows, located in the pentagonal apse choir. These stained glass windows illustrate biblical scenes such as Genesis, the childhood of Christ or the Tree of Jesse, as well as the story of Adam and Eve or that of Saint Vaast, patron saint of the church.
The church also houses a 16th-century wooden statue of Saint Barbe, bearing witness to local devotion. Classified as a historical monument by decree of 15 September 1995, it embodies both an exceptional religious, artistic and architectural heritage for a rural church in Picardie. Its state of conservation and the richness of its decorative elements make it a rare example of preserved medieval sacred art.
