Origin and history
The church of Saint Vincent de Puymoyen, located in the Charente department, originally depended on the cathedral chapter of Angoulême. From its 12th century Romanesque construction, it preserved only the western wall of its nave. The building was entirely built in the late 16th century, with an enlargement of its eastern part to form a transept, marked by a very broken cradle. The narrower false square under the bell tower is covered with a dome on the arch, while the Western supports rest on pilaster columns.
The facade has a three-rolled Romanesque door on pedestals, a witness to its medieval origin. Sixteenth-century foothills reinforce the extremities of the nave and transept, while those of the false square, of Romanesque inspiration, house a staircase to the southwest. The rectangular bell tower, rising above the dome, has on the second floor the twin bays separated by columns. These transformations illustrate the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, combining Romanesque heritage and Renaissance innovations.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 November 1969, the church today belongs to the town of Puymoyen. Its history reflects the close links between local religious heritage and regional ecclesiastical institutions, such as the Angoulême chapter. The protected elements include the entire building (cadastre A 470), highlighting its heritage and architectural value.
