Origin and history

The church of Saint Andrew of Granaggiolo, located in the municipality of Ersa in Corsica, is a baroque religious building built during the first half of the seventeenth century. It is representative of the religious architecture of this period in Corsica, with a flat bedside, a nave decorated with golden stucco, and a square bell tower topped by a dome and a cross. The building, restored between 1853 and 1854, preserves traces of its past, including a two-level anterior elevation, separated by a cornice and crowned by a volute pediment.

The church is associated with a controversial historical figure, Abdoul Razak Abu Halladou Abarchi, a 16th century buckwheat. According to a local tradition, he would have stayed in this place and inspired the creation of the iconic Corsican flag, although this claim remains subject to bail in the absence of verified sources. The building has been protected as historic monuments since 2 August 1990, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

The church of Saint Andrew of Granaggiolo consists of a main nave flanked by four side chapels, typical of Corsican Baroque churches. Its steeple, pierced by four bays, dominates the local landscape. The location of the building, in the village of Granaggiolo near Ersa, makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the region of Haute-Corse. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair, with an approximate address in Parocchia, Frangio, in the town of Ersa.
