Origin and history

The parish church Sainte-Catherine-d'Alexandrie, located in La Flotte in Charente-Maritime, finds its origins in a 12th century chapel dependent on Mauléon's castle. The present building, built mainly in the 15th century, underwent multiple transformations: partially destroyed in 1575, it was rebuilt and became an independent parish thanks to Nicolas de la Courbe de Brée, bishop of Saintes. The 17th century religious conflicts (1621) again damaged the church, requiring repairs in 1627. In the 18th century, expansions were undertaken (1742), including the destruction of adjacent houses and the elevation of the bell tower in 1765.

During the Revolution, the church was converted into a temple of Reason, before being restored in 1805 to restore its Catholic cult function. The current neo-classical façade dates back to 1818, the work of architect Jean Noyé. At the end of the 19th century, the interior was embellished: panelling in basket cove, stencil paintings (1893) by Millet and Augier, and stained glass (1876–78) made by the Besseyrias workshop of Périgueux. The latter, as well as the southern Gothic portal, have been protected since 1988 under the title of Historic Monuments.

The oldest parts still visible today include a portion of the south wall pierced by a flamboyant door and western spans under bell tower, dating back to the 15th century. The nave and the lower side, built around 1745, end with a flat bedside. The building thus illustrates centuries of architectural and religious history, marked by destruction, reconstruction and adaptations to liturgical and community needs.

The Church of St. Catherine remains a testimony to the stylistic evolutions and political upheavals of the region, from the Middle Ages to the Third Republic. Its furniture and interior decoration, preserved since the 19th century, reflect the popular devotion and craft techniques of the era, such as the stained glass windows of Besseyrias, characteristic of post-revolutionary religious art.
