Origin and history
The church of Saint-Vérain de Bazarnes, originally dedicated to Saint-Georges, is a religious building built in the 12th century. It is distinguished by its bell tower, rebuilt at the end of the 15th or at the beginning of the 16th century, as well as by a nave and low side partially rebuilt in 1839. The church houses a remarkable furniture heritage, including stone statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, a painted baptismal tank, and a bell of 1696 with a detailed inscription.
The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 1 March 1926. Among its notable elements are a 16th-century high altar, a wooden crucifix, and statues of the Virgin with the Child and Saint Anne. These objects reflect the religious and artistic importance of the church in the region, while at the same time testifying to local stylistic developments and devotional practices.
The bell of 1696, commissioned under the episcopate of André Colbert, bishop of Auxerre, explicitly mentions its link with the chapel dedicated to the Virgin and the restoration of the building. This inscription illustrates the role of canons and donors in preserving religious heritage, typical of modern-day ecclesiastical patronage practices.
The church Saint-Vérain, owned by the commune of Bazarnes, is located in the Yonne department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its architecture and furniture make it an example of rural churches in this region, marked by partial reconstructions and successive additions over the centuries.
