Clocher (Case B 263): entry by order of 23 April 1981

Origin and history

The church of Zigliara, located in the Corsican village of the same name, is a Latin cross religious building with a flat bedside and a unique nave. Originally built in 1678, as attested to the date engraved on its façade, it was enlarged in the mid-18th century before undergoing a major transformation between 1866 and 1872. This 19th-century work profoundly altered its structure, notably by adding a characteristic bell tower.

The bell tower, of square plan and erected in the nineteenth century, is distinguished by its three emphasized levels of salient moulations. The two upper levels are pierced with narrow bays surmounted by braided arches, while its apex is adorned with four obelisks and an octagonal bell with an eight-paned dome. This bell tower, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 April 1981, embodies Corsican religious architecture of the time, mixing sobriety and decorative elements.

Originally, the church was a central parish worship place for the Zigliara community. Its architectural evolution reflects the liturgical needs and the successive stylistic influences, from its foundation in the 17th century until the 19th century changes. Today, it remains a testimony of the religious and historical heritage of South Corsica, marked by periods of continuous construction and adaptation.
