Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde d'Ars-sur-Formans is an underground church built between 1959 and 1961, on the occasion of the centenary of the death of Jean-Marie Vianney, the Saint Curé d'Ars. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the basilica of Ars and is an integral part of the sanctuary. The building was designed by architects Pierre Pinsard and Hugo Vollmar and was awarded the 20th Century Heritage label on 10 March 2003. Since June 24, 2025, it has been listed as a historic monument.
Jean-Marie Vianney, pastor of Ars from 1817, is a central figure of this place. Known for his altruism, generosity and asceticism, he marked his time by organizing pilgrimages and charitable works. After his death in 1859, he was beatified in 1905 and canonized in 1925, becoming the patron saint of the parish priests. The basilica of Ars, built in 1862, houses its shawl and attracts more than 350,000 pilgrims every year.
The church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde is located at 574 rue Jean-Marie Vianney, on cadastral parcels #1005 and #402. It is fully protected, as indicated in the registration order. This monument is part of a larger religious complex, including the basilica and other elements of the sanctuary, which bear witness to the spiritual and historical importance of Ars-sur-Formans.
