Origin and history
The church of Saint-Mathieu d'Espalem, built in the 12th century, presents an irregular plan inspired by the Latin cross, characteristic of Auvergne Romanesque architecture. His choir, composed of a span under barlong dome, is articulated with an apse arched in cul-de-four. The nave is distinguished by an original organization: each span combines two arches in the middle of the twin hanger, falling outwards on straight feet and inside on committed circular columns, initially integrated into the drip wall. These columns, which became independent after the addition of the collaterals, are now doubled by lower and decentralized arcs, reflecting subsequent transformations.
In the seventeenth century, a northern collateral was added to the primitive structure, followed in the nineteenth century by a southern chapel. These extensions have modified the inner perception of the Romanesque columns, while enriching the building with various decorations: figurative caps adorning the pendants of the dome, capitals with pseudo-vegetal motifs in the apse, or still weighing on the bahut. The harmony between these heteroclite elements reflects the stylistic and liturgical evolutions that the church passed over nearly nine centuries.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 30 April 1986, Saint-Mathieu Church illustrates the religious heritage of the Haute-Loire. Its official protection highlights the value of its hybrid architecture, combining Romanesque rigour and post-medieval additions, as well as the richness of its interior decor. Owned by the municipality of Espalem, it remains a place of worship and a material testimony of local history, from its medieval origin to its modern adaptations.
