Origin and history

The Saint-Fructuous church of Irivals, located in the hamlet of Yravals (or Iravals) on the municipality of Latour-de-Carol (Pyrénées-Orientales), is a 12th century Romanesque building. It is characterized by a unique nave arched in a crib in the middle of a hanger, extended by a semicircular apse arched in a cul-de-four. Its sober architecture reflects Catalan Romanesque style, with a bell tower-wall with two arcades overlooking the western gable.

In the 17th century, an annex was added against the south wall, between the apse and the southern gate. This reshuffle reflects the successive adaptations of the building to liturgical needs. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1963, recognizing its exceptional heritage value, both for its architecture and for its furniture.

The church houses two notable altarpieces: the Gothic triptych of Saint Martha, attributed to the Master of Irivals (perhaps linked to the Serra workshop or Ramon Destorrents), and the altarpiece of the high altar dedicated to Saint Fructueux. The latter, ranked in 1957, was created in 1572 by Antoine Peytavi (Toulousan sculptor) and Michel Verdaguer (Catalan painter), illustrating the artistic collaboration between Languedoc and Catalonia.

The Iravals site, isolated in the Pyrenees, reflects the religious and cultural history of this border area. The church, dedicated to Saint Fructuous (Bishop of Tarragona in the 7th century), highlights the historical links between the Roussillon and the Spanish Catalonia. Its ranking among the historical monuments of the Pyrénées-Orientales makes it a privileged witness to the regional Romanesque heritage.
