Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Jonzac, built at the end of the 12th century, is an emblematic example of St. Its western facade, typical of this style, is characterized by arching superpositions, carved capitals and delicate modillons. A unique regional peculiarity lies in its eight summit columnettes, surmounted by conical lanterns sheltering human faces. This architectural detail, rare in Saintonge, bears witness to the originality of its initial construction.

In the 16th century, the church was enlarged with the addition of two sides, one of which still bears the arms of Louis XII. The walls preserve the stigma of the religious wars, visible in the form of arquebusade impacts. These traces recall the violent clashes that have shaken the region. Between 1847 and 1854, a major restoration restored the building to its bell tower, vaults and neo-Roman furniture, while partially erasing the damage suffered.

Archaeological excavations carried out on the courtyard in 2009 revealed a 6th–7th century Merovingian cemetery. Exhumed artifacts include jewellery (such as a "Aregonde" earring), weapons (lames, scramasaxes), fibules and remains of mineralized fabrics. These discoveries attest to an ancient occupation of the site, well before the construction of the present church. The local tradition, inspired by Pseudo-Turpin, evokes a passage of Charlemagne having deposited the relics of Saint Anthema, bishop of Poitiers, but this legend remains unverifiable.

Classified as a historical monument since 2001, the church illustrates both the Romanesque Saintongeian heritage and the historical upheavals of the region. Its hybrid architecture, combining medieval elements and subsequent changes, makes it a valuable testimony to the evolution of religious practices and conflicts that marked the Poitou-Charentes.
