Origin and history

The Saint-Hilaire church of Verneuil-le-Château is a historical monument whose construction spans centuries. The nave, Romanesque style, dates from the 12th century, while a northern collateral was added in the 17th century. A 12th century span, located under the bell tower, is covered by a 15th century vault, illustrating successive architectural transformations.

The choir, with a flat bedside, dates back to the 15th century and is surmounted by a vault in a modern cradle. A seigneurial chapel, probably built in the late 15th or early 16th century, is to the north of the choir. The bell tower, a massive square tower of Romanesque origin, saw its eastern face rebuilt in the 15th century, showing structural adaptations over time.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 18 June 1962, the church now belongs to the municipality of Verneuil-le-Château. Its hybrid architecture reflects medieval, renaissant and classical stylistic influences, while preserving defensive elements such as the Roman bell tower. The accuracy of its location is estimated at 6/10, based on available data.

The site is located in the department of Indre-et-Loire (37), in the region Centre-Val de Loire, an area marked by a rich medieval religious heritage. The churches of this period often served as a place of community gathering, worship and sometimes refuge, reflecting the social and spiritual organization of rural villages.

Architectural changes, such as the partial reconstruction of the bell tower or the addition of the seigneurial chapel, suggest an evolution of liturgical needs and local power relations. These changes were common in religious buildings, adapted to demographic and political changes over centuries.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, confirm its registration as Historic Monuments. The approximate address, 8 Rue du Moulin, allows to locate the building in the village of Verneuil-le-Château, a typical village of the historical Touraine.
