Church (Box C 445): registration by order of 7 May 1982
Origin and history
The St. Lawrence Church of St. Lawrence-d'Oingt is a religious building built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-d'Oingt, in the Rhône department (69), it embodies the architectural and spiritual evolution of the region over three centuries. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 7 May 1982 underlines its heritage value, particularly for its protected elements, such as the main structure (cadastre C 445).
The church's location, at approximately 531 Route des Quatre Chemins, reflects its anchoring in the historical landscape of Val d'Oingt. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, worship), its status as communal property indicates its central role in local life. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), suggesting coordinates to be refined.
The historical context of its construction is part of a period marked by religious and social transformations in France. In particular, the 16th and 17th centuries were marked by the Wars of Religion and the Counter-Reform, while the 18th century saw the emergence of the Enlightenment. Rural churches like St. Lawrence then played a key role, both as a place of worship, as a community gathering and as a symbol of ecclesiastical or seigneurial authority. Their architecture often reflects these multiple functions, combining late Gothic, classical or Baroque styles depending on the time and local means.
