Origin and history

The Museum of Art and History of Cholet found its origins in the creation in 1977 of a museum of history, followed in 1979 by a museum of art, both recognized by the Ministry of Culture. These two entities merged in 1993 in a dedicated building, offering a unified space to present both art works and historical collections. The beginning of the project, however, dates back to 1881, with the founding of the Société des sciences, lettres et arts de Cholet by Dr.Leon Pissot, mayor of the city. This company collected from the beginning objects related to local archaeology, the Vendée wars, as well as colonial paintings and documents, laying the foundations for future collections.

The museum's art gallery exhibits a rich selection of paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, covering mythological, religious, landscape and portraitural themes. Among the artists represented are masters such as Sassoferrato, Fragonard, Maurice Denis or Horace Vernet, as well as cubist and abstract works of the twentieth century by Gleizes, Vasarely or Kupka. A special place is given to regional artists, such as Michel Jouët, François Morellet or Pierre Charles Trémolières, native of Cholet. These collections illustrate the evolution of artistic currents, from the Academy to geometric abstraction.

The history gallery focuses on the Vendée Wars (1793–96), a conflict between the Catholic and Royal armies and the Republican forces, with a focus on the Battle of Cholet (17 October 1793) and the Virée de Galerne. Symbolic figures such as Cathelineau, La Rochejaquelein or Charette are evoked through weapons, flags and documents of the time. A collection of objects belonging to the Duchess of Berry, as well as the relics of the uprisings of 1815, complete this historical aspect. The Salle des Générals Vendéens is a highlight of this museum journey.
