Origin and history

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Évecquemont Church, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, is a Catholic parish building with the oldest parts dating back to the 13th century. Its choir, of radiant Gothic style, dates from the second half of this century and is distinguished by its architectural elegance, with a five-sided apse and capitals carved of polylobed leaves. This well preserved choir contrasts with the nave and bell tower, rebuilt in the 18th century in a sober and rustic style, influenced by neo-classicism.

The Renaissance porch, built around 1565 by architect Nicolas Le Mercier, and the north side of the same period, although restored in 1738, testify to an ambitious period of renovation. The porch, inspired by that of Marines, is distinguished by its canned Corinthian columns and sculpted motifs (rosettes, sheets of acanthe). Inside, the north side preserves traces of its original architecture, such as Corinthian capitals and carved modillons, including a salamander evoking François I.

The church was listed as historical monuments in 1926. In the 20th century, major restorations (1977-1978) consolidated the choir, porch and chapels, although some parts, such as the north side, kept traces of old repairs. Today affiliated with the parish of Meulan, it hosts Sunday Masses and houses remarkable furniture, including three classified elements: two 16th and 17th century statues and a painting attributed to Luca Giordano.

The steep site of Évecquemont, on the banks of the Seine, influenced the settlement of the church, whose northern elevation dominates the road of Adhemar. The bedside, visible from a small parking lot, contrasts with the south and west facades, enclaved in a private property. The bells, melted in 1887 and 1889 by Dubuisson et Fils, complete this sound and architectural heritage.

The history of the parish dates back to 990, when Richard Sans-Peur, Duke of Normandy, attached Évecquemont to the collegiate of Fécamp. Under the Old Regime, the chapter of Fécamp, then the Benedictine abbey, remained the collators until the Revolution. The term Assumption, dedicated to the Holy Virgin, reflects this spiritual and historical filiation.

The eastern parts, despite their restoration, retain remarkable gothic details, such as the thin foothills of the Čabside or the O-ring formations. On the other hand, the north crusillon and the tower of the bell tower, constructed of irregular bells, illustrate a more rustic architecture, typical of the local buildings redesigned over the centuries.
