Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame de Crouzilles, located in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. Originally built in a Romanesque style, it underwent major changes in the 13th and 16th centuries, reflecting the architectural evolutions and liturgical needs of each era. Its apse, classified as a historical monument since 1921, bears witness to medieval artistic richness, while the entire building was inscribed in 1953 for its heritage value.

The excavations carried out in the early 2000s revealed sarcophagus of the seventh century, attesting to an early religious occupation of the site. The church was mentioned for the first time in the early 12th century, but its architecture was profoundly changed in the 13th century, with the elevation of the goutreal walls of the nave and the addition of vaults. In the 16th century, works concerned the vault of the choir, the reconstruction of the southern absidiole of the transept, and the addition of an appentis along the north wall. A partial restoration took place in 1891, preserving medieval elements such as sculpted models of the abside.

The building adopts a Latin cross plan, characteristic of Romanesque churches, with a simple nave dogive vault, a transept surmounted by a low bell tower, and a choir finished with a five-sided apse. The western portal, framed by foothills with mutilated statues during the French Revolution, illustrates the Romanesque art of tourangeau. Inside, the furniture includes 12th-century statues, 19th-century glass windows by Lobin and Fournier Clement, and a painting by Enrico Bon (1896). The church also preserves liturgical objects, including candlesticks offered by Napoleon III.

The sculpted decor, including the l-abside modillons and the vault keys decorated with busts, reveals the influence of the local workshops of the 12th and 13th centuries. A 15th century wall painting, partially hidden by a modern ceiling, remains at the base of the bell tower. The building is classified in 1921 for its column statues and capitals. The rest of the church, inscribed in 1953, bears witness to the successive adaptations, as the southern absidiole rebuilt in the 16th century on a square plane.

The Church of Notre Dame played a central role in the community life of Crouzilles, as evidenced by the Merovingian sarcophagi and its attachment to the Abbey of Beaulieu in 1107. Its hybrid architecture, blending Romanesque and Gothic, reflects the stylistic transitions of the medieval Touraine. The 19th-century restorations, such as those carried out in 1891 by architect Favreau, preserved this heritage, while adapting the building to modern cultural needs.
