Origin and history
The church of St.Christoly found its origins in the 12th century, when a small Romanesque church was built consisting of three spans. Only the first western span, supporting the bell tower, remains today in its original state. This Romanesque vestige is the oldest nucleus of the current building, marking the starting point of its architectural history.
In the 15th century, the church underwent a major transformation with the addition of a wide sideline on its southern face. The reconstruction or profound modification of the other two original spans occurred at the same time, almost completely erasing the primitive Romanesque structure, with the exception of the western span. A later extension, located to the north and covered with a simple panel, completed the expansion of the building, reflecting the liturgical or demographic needs of the community.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 16 January 1926, the Church of St.Christoly illustrates the evolution of architectural styles, from Romanesque to late Gothic. Its official protection underlines its heritage importance, while its communal property guarantees its accessibility to the public. The building, opened daily, remains a place of worship and memory for the municipality of Saint-Christoly-de-Blaye.
