Origin and history

The parish church of Saint-Hilaire de Sérigné, classified as a historical monument since 1989, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. From this period it preserves its western facade and central portal, considered a masterpiece of the transition to Gothic. The square bell tower, built in the 14th century, dominates the building and houses four bells, one dating from 1853 and three from 1869. The flamboyant Gothic church consists of a unique nave and a transept with two side chapels.

The interior of the church is decorated with carved oak stalls, a 16th century wooden Christ and nine statues. These elements bear witness to the artistic and religious richness of the monument throughout the centuries. The main portal, of rare beauty, is particularly remarkable and has contributed to its ranking. The church is placed under the name of Saint Hilaire, bishop of Poitiers, reflecting its spiritual importance in the region.

Sérigné, a rural village in Vendée near Fontenay-le-Comte, is marked by a preserved medieval heritage. Saint-Hilaire Church, with its 800 years of history, remains a central symbol of local community and religious life. Its architecture combining Romanesque and Gothic influences illustrates the stylistic evolutions of the region between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries.

The village is part of a typical agricultural landscape of the vendean grove, where arable land and forested areas coexist. The church, located in the heart of the village, probably played a major social role, serving as a gathering place for the inhabitants throughout the centuries. Its classification in 1989 preserved this unique architectural heritage in the department.

Close to the church, the château de la Girardie, another well-preserved medieval monument, completes the historical heritage of Sérigné. These two buildings illustrate the strategic and religious importance of the municipality in the Middle Ages. Their preservation today offers a valuable testimony to local and regional history, attracting lovers of architectural heritage.
