Nef and bell tower: inscription by order of 23 June 1933
Origin and history
The Saint-Martin de Canteleu Church, located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, is a Catholic religious building built in the 16th century. It underwent significant architectural changes in the 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of these periods. Its flamboyant Gothic-style porch and Renaissance doors bear witness to this rich history, while its unique nave and bell tower, inscribed in the historic monuments in 1933, make it a remarkable heritage.
The church experienced a major event in 1971 with a fire that damaged part of the structure. The roof was reconstructed identically, and the stained glass windows, mostly dated from the 19th century, were restored in 1992. Among the peculiarities of the building are the presence of graffiti representing ships in the bell tower, adding a mysterious touch to its history. These elements, combined with its central role in the local community, make it an emblematic place of Norman heritage.
The precise location of the church, in 4 Place du Général-Leclerc in Canteleu, as well as its partial inscription (nef and bell tower) as historical monuments, underline its cultural and architectural importance. The stained glass, graffiti and successive modifications offer an overview of artistic and religious practices throughout the centuries, while anchoring the building in local and regional history.
