Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin in Fixin came into being in the 12th century, with a first building attested in 1172 on the Grands Crus road, in the heart of the Burgundy vineyard. This place of worship, dedicated to Saint Martin, is part of a medieval context marked by wine and religious expansion in Burgundy. Its strategic location, on an axis frequented by pilgrims and merchants, reflects the importance of churches as spiritual and social landmarks at that time.

In the 15th century (1453), the church underwent major changes, including the partial reconstruction of its structure and the addition of a characteristic bell tower, built of porphyry pink stone and covered with varnished tiles typical of the region. This bell tower, both protective and emblematic, symbolizes the architectural adaptation to the defensive and aesthetic needs of the post-medieval period. Local materials, such as coated bellows and flat tiles, testify to Burgundy resources and know-how.

The architecture of the church combines Romanesque elements (baths in the middle, portal) and Gothic (broken arches, foothills), illustrating stylistic transitions between the 12th and 15th centuries. The nave, divided into three spans, and the flat bedside pierced with various bays, reflect a gradual evolution of construction techniques. The triangular pediment porch and the square pediment tower surmounted by a plumbing tile arrow add to its originality.

Since June 23, 1947, Saint Martin's church has been listed as a historic monument, recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects a building that embodies both the religious history of Burgundy, its wine heritage (via the Grands Crus road) and its hybrid architecture. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a witness to medieval cultural exchanges in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
