Origin and history
The church of Saint-Nicolas de Moirans-en-Montagne, classified as a Historical Monument, was rebuilt in the 15th century in two distinct countrysides, under the architectural influence of the Abbey of St.Claude. Its flamboyant western gate is accessible by a large staircase leading to the courtyard. The nave, almost square, is vaulted dogives with doubles and formets integrated into the supports, without capitals. The chorus, with a flat bedside, features a dogive vault resting on caps, while seven windows with flamboyant fillings illuminate the building.
The structure reflects the characteristics of late Gothic, with a harmonious fusion between decorative elements (glasses, portals) and the constructive techniques of the period. The building, fully registered by decree of 19 September 2007, belongs to the commune and bears witness to the artistic influence of the region, linked to the abbey of Saint-Claude, the major spiritual and cultural centre of Franche-Comté.
The official address at the Mérimée base (29 rue Pasteur) and GPS coordinates (6 Côte du Four) confirm its anchoring in the urban fabric of Moirans-en-Montagne. Although the accuracy of the location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), the church remains an accessible heritage landmark, illustrating the medieval heritage of the Jura.
