Origin and history
The church of the Assumption of Belan-sur-Ource, located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a Catholic religious building built in the late 15th century or early 16th century. It depicts the flamboyant ogival architectural style, with an imposing nave, a transept, low side and a polygonal choir. Its square bell tower, positioned at the cross of the transept, is a characteristic element of this period.
In the 18th century, between 1780 and 1782, a classical portico was added to the façade, marking a late stylistic evolution. Later, between 1866 and 1868, a lantern arrow was erected, completing the silhouette of the building. These additions reflect successive architectural adaptations, combining Gothic and classical influences.
The church houses a rich liturgical furniture, including 16th century stained glass windows classified as historical monuments in 1992, as well as 16th and 17th century statues and paintings. Notable works include altarpieces, representations of saints (Nicolas, Claude, Catherine of Alexandria) and religious scenes such as the Assumption or the Education of the Virgin. These elements testify to the artistic and devout vitality of the region at that time.
Classified as an inventory of historical monuments since 21 June 1927, the church of the Assumption is a protected heritage, property of the municipality. Its state of conservation makes it one of the most remarkable churches of the late 15th century in Burgundy, attracting attention for its architecture and exceptional furniture.
