Origin and history

The church of the Most Holy Trinity of La Selle-sur-le-Bied finds its origins in the influence of the abbey of Ferrières, which founded a priory around which the commune developed, probably from the twelfth century. From this period there remain architectural elements in the nave, such as the voussures of the main gate, a high bay in the south wall, and a large arcade composed of massive pillars and columns. These remains testify to the initial importance of the place in the local religious organization.

The choir, rebuilt at the beginning of the sixteenth century in the flamboyant Gothic style, marks a second major phase of the building. The nave was then pierced with large filling windows and adorned with murals, organized in framed panels. These frescoes, located on the walls of the main vessel, represent apostles and detailed scenes, rich in landscape, clothing and expressive elements. The roof and octagonal arrow were also redone at that time, reflecting a desire to beautify and modernize.

A general restoration took place between 1874 and 1877, profoundly transforming the building. The choir was vaulted with dogives, and the western facade, completely redone, underwent major modifications. This period of work marked the completion of the present church configuration, combining medieval heritage and 19th century interventions. The 15th century wall paintings, classified in 1960, and the entire building, inscribed in 2009, highlight its exceptional heritage value.

The church, owned by the commune, now embodies a multi-series architectural and artistic testimony. Its history reflects stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs, from its monastic origin to its present role in the cultural landscape of La Selle-sur-le-Bied and the Centre-Val de Loire region.
