Origin and history
The cemetery of Grand-Champ, located in the Morbihan department in Brittany, is known to house a 16th century cross, a central element of its heritage. This cross, of a height of about four meters, is distinguished by its shelled barrel on the four corners in its upper part. At its base, under a mitre pediment, are sculptures depicting a bishop with a manipulator, a character holding a book and a palm, Saint Catherine with his wheel, as well as an unidentified fourth character. These artistic and religious details testify to the symbolic importance of this monument in the local community.
The Grand-Champ Cemetery Cross was listed as historic monuments on May 23, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. The monolithic barrel, erected on a granite base, supports a diamond-shaped pierced cross, with three equal flowered arms. This type of cross, typical of 16th century Breton religious art, often served as a spiritual and social landmark for the inhabitants. Its location in the centre of the cemetery highlights its role in funeral and commemorative practices of the time.
From a technical point of view, the cross is located precisely at the following address: 32 Rue du Général de Gaulle, 56390 Grand-Champ. The available data indicate that the location is fair (level 5 out of 10), and the monument is owned by the municipality. Although sources mention specific protected elements (the 16th century cross, Cadastre L 2), no additional information is provided on any other remarkable elements of the cemetery or on its contemporary use.
