Cross (Box B 187): registration by order of 8 May 1933

Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Malguénac is a historical monument located at the bedside of the church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, in the village of Malguénac, Brittany. Dated from the 17th century, it is composed of a walk, a pedestal, and a granite column with four sides decorated with carved friezes depicting scenes of the Passion. The monument, which lost its sommital cross, also includes a mutilated Pietà surmounted by a shell-shaped dais.

Registered as historical monuments since May 8, 1933, this cross illustrates the Breton religious architecture of modern times. Its base and barrel, decorated with symbolic motifs, reflect the importance of calvaries in the spiritual and community life of the region. The shields on the cross could indicate a link with local families or sponsors, although their identity is not specified in the sources.

The monument, owned by the commune, is today a testimony of 17th century Christian art in Morbihan. Its location at the bedside of the church underlines its central role in the funeral and religious practices of Malguenac. The coarse sculptures, although partially damaged, offer an overview of the artistic techniques and beliefs of the time, notably through the representation of the Passion and Pietà.
